09/01/2025Food Trends For 2025
Another year, another set of food trends!
With 2025 now upon us, we are in for 365 days of all new food & drink trends to keep up to date with.
In 2024 we predicted a mix of plant-based foods, more colours and flavours, wellness and small plates, but what could we expect this coming year?
Take a look at some of the predictions we are making for the New Year here at M&P O’Sullivan that you can begin to anticipate.
Flavour Combinations & Fusions
With the growth in people’s accessibility to the internet and specifically social media platforms like Instagram and Tiktok, the world is very quickly discovering and learning about other cultures' staple dishes, bursting at the seams with beautiful and complex flavour profiles, allowing everyone to step outside the box.
This increased exposure is not only fueling creativity in the kitchen, leading to a surge in innovative flavour fusions, such as Korean-Mexican and Japanese-Peruvian cuisine but also in what people desire and maybe even expect from bars and restaurants alike.
Fusion is one to look out for this coming year, with over 50% of global consumers keen to explore more flavour combinations than ever before.
Affordable Nutrition
The idea of “health kicks” as a fad is slowly dying out as the new reality is it isn’t just a kick anymore, people want to build healthy habits that stick, and one of the most important places to start is with nutrition.
However, with the cost of living rising, finding ways to eat nutritiously, but affordably will be ever-present in 2025.
After all, a recent survey by the IFIC finds price as the second most important consideration when food & beverage shopping (according to 76% of consumers).
People want to seek out healthy meal options that taste good and can be just as enjoyable as the fast food and takeaways that everyone typically enjoys.
Finding ways to make healthy taste good has to be a priority for 2025 because soon a trend will no longer be a trend but an absolute reality, but how it will be made affordable will be the difference between achieving nutrition goals or not.
Meal Prep Culture
“Meal prep” culture is booming, and with the increasingly fast-paced lives of consumers, quick wins are essential.
The New Year could definitely see a continuation of home-cooked meal preparation, giving people quick breakfast, lunch and dinner options with minimal effort.
Further to this, convenient, store-bought meal preps are bound to become a must-have, even further reducing the time & effort needed to be given to the rigmarole of thinking of, buying and cooking 3 meals a day 365 days a year.
In the U.S. it is estimated that around 44% of people meal prep on a consistent basis, whether for fitness, portion control, savings, convenience or other.
Healthy Convenience
Similar to the convenience of meal preps for work or gym days, there is also likely to be a growth in demand for frozen, microwavable healthy ingredients e.g. frozen vegetables, frozen berries, fresh pasta etc.
According to Nestlé, “flavours done fast” is high up on the list of priorities for consumers in 2025, because anything people can do to speed up the cooking process after a long day of work is a must.
Home cooking is still very well loved, but so is time-saving and efficiency, and 2025 could see these going hand in hand.
Coffee Combinations
It feels as though the coffee industry is only gaining speed…and that’s because it is.
While people still very much enjoy their classic coffees, recent insights from a survey completed by Datassential point to 62% of respondents looking forward to trying unique coffee drinks in 2025.
People are seeing coffee trends all over the internet, and it’s only a matter of time before expecting to be able to get them from local cafés and coffee shops.
2025 will be the year to keep your finger on the pulse of emerging coffee trends - whether flavours, alternative milk, or new recipes, be ready to adapt to this quickly growing trend!
Turning Up The Heat
While it may not have been everyone’s cup of tea at one point in time, over the last number of years, there has been a steadily growing demand for hot & spicy food.
In 2024, a survey by Kalsec found that 95% of people enjoy their food mild or hotter, with 3 out of 5 respondents saying they are eating more spicy food than that of the year previous.
Hot honey was one of the most prevalent food trends throughout 2024, adding a sweet but salty and fiery flavour to almost any meal.
This year, it could continue to be all about chilli, hot sauces and spicy flavours with an increasing number of consumers taking a liking to heat in their meals.
